My First Inktober
Interesting that the first time I’ve chosen to do Inktober they made the prompt list ‘travel’ themed. Those who know me know I’m not an intrepid explorer. I love a plane ride (16hrs with 2 magazines and a book?! Heaven), but the minute I’m dropped somewhere unfamiliar I find it hard to leave the hotel.
So to say that this year’s theme didn’t appeal is an understatement. And the online discourse in September when the list was released was that it also fell flat. There were two reasons I wanted to do it though:
-I’d never done it before and always wanted to;
-my wonderful co-lecturer, Laurie, and I made a pact.
So how to tackle an uninspiring list so it becomes appealing to me: Make it Fashion. I spent every spare minute the week before October 1st researching and brainstorming particular fashion images I associated with each prompt. I’d download inspiring images, save them to an iPhoto album then cull till I got a good mix. It’s also helpful to see them laid out next to each other.
Some came to me immediately:
1.Backpack (iconic quilted Chanel)
16.Grunge (my queen Courtney Love)
22.Camp (Met Gala, Harry Styles in Gucci of course)
30.Violin (Viktor & Rolf’s SS ‘08 show)
Some took a lot longer:
5.Binoculars (certain there’s a good ref of the Hermes ones out there)
12.Remote (tv obvs but couldn’t find)
19.Ridge (this one’s still not ridge but fine)
23.Rust (impossible, went for a rust print but didn’t translate in B&W)
Some I was afraid wouldn’t translate:
2.Discover (DISC-cover, Rabanne paillettes)
9.Sun (Model Fei Fei Sun)
20.Uncharted (sea explorer, sailor hat)
28.Jumbo (jumbo-BOW)
October is historically very busy for me also so to save time I did all 31 in Proceate with a mix of their supplied ink brushes and a set I bought from @heygiudi. I mostly ended up using the flat ink brush and the_____
All in all such a fun project! You guys know how I love a project, I actually do miss ‘365 Days of Hands’ and ‘100 Magazine Covers’ and ‘100 Models Ink’ (all saved as Instagram highlights along with Inktober). Now I have 31 illustrations to further expand, maybe into drawings or paintings. Oh and I only missed one day!
To wrap up, the most viewed based on what Instagram has told me were:
11.Snacks (Kate Moss, smoking & drinking)
14.Roam (Gisele which was also controversial)
22.Camp (Harry Styles being gorgeous)
27.Road (Nadia Lee Cohen for Paris Texas shoes)
But this doesn’t necessarily mean they are the crowd faves, so what’s your favourite?
